When High-Achieving Women Burn Out, Nobody Notices - Not Even Them

I remember standing in the toilet cubicle before a meeting, crying.

Not because something terrible had happened. Not because of a specific incident or a bad piece of news. Just because.

And then I wiped my face, walked out, sat down at the table, and nobody knew.

Around the same time, I started getting gastric pain attacks. My body was clenching from the inside, sending me signal after signal that something was wrong. I just thought it was genetic, without realising it kept happening, more and more frequent.

And in meetings, I suddenly had no voice. I would open my mouth and doubt every word before it came out. I felt my voice trembled when I did speak.

I told myself it was stress. I told myself it would pass. I told myself to just get through the week.

That week lasted many years.

This is what burnout actually looks like in high-achieving women. Not a dramatic breakdown. Not falling apart in public.

Just a slow, quiet unravelling - while you keep showing up, keep delivering, keep holding it all together on the outside.

The Signs Nobody Talks About

You cry before walking into the office. Not because something happened. Just because. And then you wipe your face, walk in, and nobody knows. You have become so good at holding it together that even you have started to believe you are fine.

You've stopped having opinions. Someone asks what you want for lunch and you genuinely don't know anymore. The woman who used to have a view on everything has gone very quiet. It feels like a small thing. It isn't.

Your body keeps sending SOS signals you keep ignoring. Migraines. Jaw clenching. A knot that never leaves your shoulders. Gastric pain that comes out of nowhere. Your body has been trying to tell you something for months. You've been too busy to listen.

You keep thinking "just get through this week." And it's been that week for six months. You're not managing your life anymore. You're just surviving it. And somewhere along the way, surviving started to feel normal.

You wake up exhausted before the day even begins. You slept seven hours. Your body feels like it slept none. And you already know today is going to take everything you have.

What I Did, and What I Wish I Had Known

For me, it took hitting a wall so hard that I made the decision to leave my job entirely. To step away from everything I had built and go on a journey to rediscover who I was beneath the title, the performance, and the people-pleasing.

That journey changed my life. But it doesn't have to be that dramatic for you.

You don't have to lose everything before you start listening to yourself.

You can take small steps today - to heal, to grow, and to come back to yourself before burnout takes the decision out of your hands.

Three Places to Start

1. Ask yourself - what does rest mean for me in this season? Not the idea of rest. Your version of it. Maybe it's a slow walk in the park. A yoga class. Reading a book by yourself with no agenda. Whatever it is - schedule it into your calendar this week. Not when things slow down. Now. Treat it like your most important meeting. Because it is.

2. Start with community. Join The Purposeful Circle - a free mentoring community for women who desire to live with more purpose each day. A space to be honest, to be seen, and to grow alongside women who truly understand. Because healing is always faster when you don't do it alone.

3. Start with a conversation. If you're ready to go deeper - book a free Clarity Call with me. We'll talk about where you are, what's been holding you back, and what's possible when you stop just surviving.

You deserve more than getting through the week.

And it starts with one small step today.

With Love,

Elynn
